Air:
Jump from a ramp.
Backside:
a turn over the chest side towards the direction of travel.
Bank:
Any type of slope that can be used for skating.
Carving:
Accelerate in a curve by applying pressure to the board.
Coping:
A round metal tube at the top edge of a ramp.
Curb:
A flat, elongated block with an edge or a curbstone.
Downhill:
Riding down a mountain on a board.
Drop In:
Going down a ramp with the tail resting on the ground.
Fake:
Ride backwards on the board in the normal position.
Flatland:
A flat surface without obstacles that is suitable for skating.
50/50:
Grinding on both axes. In freestyle: standing on the axis with one foot.
Flat:
Any flat surface that can be used for skating.
Flip:
A rotation of the board around its longitudinal axis.
Freestyle:
A basic skateboarding discipline in which tricks are performed while riding or standing in flatland; handstands and pirouettes on the board are also part of the trick repertoire.
Frontside:
A turn over the back side towards the direction of travel.
Funbox:
Various ramps, usually facing each other in a square, with a driveable platform. Rails and steps can also be integrated.
Goofy / Regular / Mongo:
The basic positions on a skateboard.
Grind:
Grinding the axle(s) sliding on an edge.
Hang Up:
Getting caught on the coping with the front or rear axle.
Halfpipe:
A skateboard track shaped like a large gutter.
Kicker / Ramp:
A slope for jumping off.
Longboards:
A long skateboard (90 cm to 150 cm) with soft wheels and smooth steering.
Mr Wilson:
A fall in which the board practically pulls the ground out from under your feet.
Mini ramp:
The little brother of the halfpipe. Not quite as steep and high as the big ramp (approx. 1 to 2 meters).
Mongopush:
Pushing off to accelerate with the front foot. Learned and retained through incorrect skating habits.
Manual:
Driving and balancing on one axle at the same time.
Nolly:
An ollie trick jumped from the nose instead of the tail.
Nose:
The front upward bent end of the deck.
Ollie:
Tail popped jump.
Pop / popping:
The act of jerking the tail onto the ground to perform an Ollie Pop trick on the skateboard.
First:
Standing on the edge of the board. Also called rail.
Pump:
A special technique for acceleration, off-road or in the mini ramp and halfpipe.
Push:
Starting and accelerating with the skateboard.
Quarterpipe:
Free-standing ramp with a round curve (transition).
Slalom board:
Special board to avoid obstacles downhill.
Skate park:
The facility for skateboarders with various obstacles.
Shove It:
Move the board with your feet around the vertical axis without flipping, backside or frontside.
Slides:
Slide sideways over objects and floors as you ride.
Switch:
Changing your own basic position.
Tail:
The rear upward bent end of the deck.
Transitions:
The curve in a halfpipe, mini ramp or bowl.
Wheelies:
Balancing on one axis while standing and moving.
